150 million (DKK) and two exits in three years

  • Rainmaking is today the co-owner of five companies, the first of which was founded in 2006.
  • The total turnover for the five companies is approximately 150 million DKK, with a total of around 60 employees in all (including the holding company).
  • In August 2008 we exited from the German company CityLasik and in june 2009 we exited from the Danish company GodtSyn.

Startupbootcamp

Startupbootcamp is a Copenhagen-based European micro-investment and mentorship program for entrepreneurs.
 
Up to 10 teams are selected based solely on the potential of their business idea and the quality of the individuals. Startupbootcamp supports each team member with a stipend of 25.000 DKK (3.300 EUR). 

Teams are given a spot in an incubator environment in the heart of Copenhagen and follow an intensive 3 month program of mentorship from 50+ top-notch entrepreneurs and business gurus which ends with a pitch to external investors on Investor Day.  In return, Startupbootcamp takes a 5% to 10% equity stake in each startup. 
 
Startupbootcamp was initiated in response to the growing deal flow at Rainmaking. It is inspired by other successful programs such as Techstars and Ycombinator but is not focused solely on web-based tech companies. The ambition is to attract entrepreneurs from the greater Nordic region but the program is open to anyone with a strong track record and great business idea.
 
Startupbootcamp was co-founded and is led by Alex Farcet (independent entrepreneur) and Carsten Kølbek (Rainmaking Partner).

CyclePods

CyclePods Ltd is a UK based company, which design, produce and sell eco-friendly cycle solutions called a CyclePod, Spacepod, MiniPod and coming soon Streetpod. All products by CyclePods Ltd are developed to save space, be easy to use and also to secure bikes against theft. This is done by a system that allows both wheels and frame of the bike to be locked into CyclePod products. The company is CO2 neutral and all CyclePods products are produced by using sustainable materials, which are recyclable and recycled.

The company was founded 4 years ago by the designer James Steward and Natalie Connell. Quickly after founding the company, they got hold of the experienced businessman and business angel Pat McCarthy who is now acting as an investor and a member of the board.

The products have won design and business awards and have also been shown on TV in numerous countries. This has contributed to the great demand and today CyclePods products are sold to a handful of countries besides the core markets in England and Ireland. On the list of customers we find companies such as BBC, Sky, The Guardian, Pepsi, Reebok, Sainsbury and IKEA.

Rainmaking’s main task is to manage the international expansion and to build a network of well- functioning distributors. Hampus Hellsvik from Rainmaking will be Project Manager in collaboration with Partner Carsten Kølbek.

GruppeKøb

Since Marts 2009, Rainmaking has been testing a concept called GruppeKøb.

The concept, which we have tested from different angles, is to bundle the bargaining power of people, companies and associations on a web based platform, through which unique offers on products and services can be reached.

So far, we have primarily been focusing on selling physical products such as golf equipment, furniture and bikes. Now (September 2009), we feel it is time to change the focus again and thus, in the forthcoming months we will develop the concept to support services such as insurances, electricity bills and fuel prices within the concept of GruppeKøb.

We are currently considering the possibilities of an international expansion.

GruppeKøb has been started by Morten Kristensen and Thomas Mølgaard and is 100% owned by Rainmaking.

Godt Syn

GodtSyn helps people from the Scandinavian countries to permanently bid their glasses and contact lenses farewell. Laser operations are easy, painless and pay for themselves in three years when compared with standard contact lens costs.

In May 2009, Godt Syn was sold to Memira who is owned by the Swedish investing corporation Investor AB. With this exit, Godt Syn immediately got a larger geographic coverage as customers can now be offered surgery in 11 different clinics throughout Scandinavia. At the same time, the customers have access to even more experienced eye specialists and surgeons in an organization who performs treatment as often as every 5 minutes.

The exit of Godt Syn to Memira has been conducted through an ‘Earn out model’, which means that Rainmaking continuously will be involved in Godt Syn’s overall management and value creation until the end of 2012.

Godt Syn was established in 2006 by Rainmaking partner Morten Abildgaard Kristensen, who today remains overall responsible for the company’s management.

CityLasik

CityLasik is a chain of seven eye clinics in Germany that were opened in the second half of 2007 and the first half of 2008.

The chain has a total of 150-200 customers per month and this figure is steadily increasing. Our customers reclaim full vision without glasses or contact lenses after undergoing an easy and painless laser surgery.

CityLasik is owned in part by Rainmaking, Vaarda Øjenklinik and investor Jannick B. Pedersen.

In August 2008, 67% of CityLasik was sold to Memira, which is owned by the Swedish investment firm, Investor AB. The remaining 33% will be sold during 2010 and 2011 based on an earn-out model in which Rainmaking will continue to be involved in the company’s overall management and creation of value.

CityLasik is operated by Rainmaking partners Carsten Kølbek and Morten Bjerregaard in collaboration with Country Manager Stefan Kremer.

FROKOST.DK

Frokost.dk delivers lunch to companies within the area of Greater Copenhagen. Each day, we serve food to approximately 5.000 people allocated in 270 different workplaces.

Frokost.dk offers a unique concept where customers can choose freely among 20 different kitchens. This gives variation as well as freedom of choice.

The concept has been so successful that we, within the first year, created 20 million DDK in turnover. The second year we passed 50 million DDK in turnover and in 2008 we reach 80 million DDK.

The company was started in 2006 by Rainmaking Partner Martin Bjergegaard and Business Developer Tanya Stenz in collaboration with Claus Meyer and Claus Tingstrøm. In 2008, Claus Meyer and Claus Tingstrøm decided to withdraw from their position as co-owners and as a result Rainmaking is now owners by majority.

The company is headed by Mads Aarøe Mathiesen whom has worked in Rainmaking as well as in the consulting house Booz & Company.
